The Canadian Power and Sail Squadron is the recognized leader in safe boating and boater education in Canada (See USPS in the United States).  If you're not already a member, register for a Basic Boating course, fly the CPS flag proudly, and get your drivers license.  You'll be glad you did.  I took the Basic Boating course, and enjoyed it so much, I continued on to Piloting, Advanced Piloting, Junior Navigator and Radio Operator's Certificate.  They are ALL useful, worthwhile courses, that will be of benefit to any serious boater.  Imagine how impressed your friends will be when you pull out your sextant, and calculate your position, based on the Sun, Moon, Stars and Planets.  A must-have backup for when your GPS fails....
